All of Mark Twain's many travel books are astounding for his genius in perceiving the humorous truth in every situation he encounters. "Travels Abroad," "Following the Equator" are brilliant, but my favorite is "Roughing it," about his trip from Missouri to Nevada. Especially appealing are the parts about Salt Lake City (laugh-out-loud hilarious take on polygamy), Lake Tahoe, Mono Lake in California, and Hawaii.

the best travel book I've read is Ghosts:Washington Revisited The Ghostlore of the nation's capital. I'm really into ghost and I actaul believe in them thanks to a spirtual visit I had several years ago in Lincoln's tomb, long story short I turned around and he was there with Willie I belive it was. Yes that is very nutty but I'm convinced. You should definitely read this book has some great stories. The book was authored by John Alexander.

Fodder's makes some great travel books to use as general reference guides. Otherwise, if you are looking for actual novels, Patrick O'Brien has written a great series of pieces that captures your mind at a specific point in time at many unusual places around the world. These places were just as accurate then as they are today, since he does a great job at depicting the locales. I hope that this helps!
