I don't exactly know the weeks, but I think it's around 8 months. I do know for sure that it's in the last stages of pregnancy. Sometimes doctors prescribe medication when they feel the baby needs to come out sooner to develop the lungs fully before delivery.

My son was born at 31 weeks but I went into preterm labor at the end of 28 weeks and then again at 29 weeks. When I went into the hospital at 28 weeks, I was given a shot of steriods to develop my son's lungs. The doctors said at that time, they're not developed fully and if he was born without the shot, there'd be complications. However, because I'm high risk with this pregnancy, my OB/GYN said the goal is 32 weeks. The baby's lungs would be stronger and there's less of a risk.

I dont know for sure, but my 3rd son was born at 34 weeks and his lungs were completely developed. He was never hooked up to any machines or anything. As a matter of fact he went home with me 2 days later. He was perfectly healthy. Some babys develope faster than others though.

The respiratory system develops late. I have twin boys, and as with most, they were born early. My wife's doctor, in his wisdom, administered a shot to my wife that would accelerate the development of the respiratory system. After they were born, their lungs were fine, but they had a constant throat problem, which is getting better as they grow. They are now 6 years old.
