BUT I only watch a few of hours t.v. VERY late at night. from around 10pm to 1 am (ish) . What are my chances of getting caught. The t.v is upstairs not connected to an outdoor ariel. And I am out at work from 8.00 am till 5.30pm monday to friday and no one else is in the house therefore IF a detector van knocks at my door during these hours no one will be in. I recon my chances are very good. What do you think.

They know who has a licence and who has`nt , they can call to your home upto 9pm at night !
last year at around 9pm we had a knock at the door my husband went and there was a scruffy looking bloke at the door he was from the tv licencing ,no van just a rusty old fiesta !
We were covered though as we had only just moved to the house less than a week earlier and had`nt transferred it from the old property , but we still got a reminder off the tv licencing people !
They have to prove you have a tv in your home and as you use it after 9pm then i think you should get away with it !
Just be careful if you have anyone knocking on your door late at night !

It's not worth the risk. I only watch Doctor Who (and Torchwood) and sometimes the news. Over a year I see perhaps 50 hours of TV at most.
I pay my licence fee because:
1 - I don't want to risk getting fined.
2 - I think not paying is stealing and I am not a thief.
3 - It's like £2 per week which is less than I spend on milk.
4 - I think the BBC deserves the money because of all the great TV and radio shows they make.
5 - I HATE HATE HATE adverts.

The fine is a fortune don't risk being a thief just because you might not get caught!

well, personally i think you are pushing your luck, and this is from experience because i got done and £600.00 is not funny, and with T.V. license courts if you don't turn up you have a warrant out for your arrest straight away. thats the first point. regarding the detector van, it can tell if you have a receiver in your house, and if he calls when your are in, even if you tell them that you don't watch it and it is not on, it makes not one iota of difference, the law states that if it has a 3 pin plug on the end it is intention to use, so, get one pronto! if you ring them up you can pay by card weekly at the P.O. its a few quid a week, I thought i could box clever, but they can tell u what u r watching when they knock at the door, and also students and tenants alike beware, if you share a house and you have a lock on your bedroom door whether you use it or not, you are all individually responsible for your tv license as are students in halls of residence!

Don't answer door, get a spy hole, they are not allowed to enter anybody's premises, but if you answer the door and they can hear or see the TV through a window then you will get fined. Another way you could be caught is if you are not home but someone is housesitting and they accidently answer the door. Or you could be really unlucky and they wait for you.

Good for you brother in arms.
It's about time EVERYBODY took a stand in the UK and stopped paying this extra Income Tax (the TV licence) which rakes in £3.5 BILLION a year to the government NOT the BBC. The reason they charge it is because mugs pay it. Some European countries receive BBC for FREE which UK mugs pay for.
What are you 'I'm happy paying a TV licence' people going to do when they charge a licence fee for using your own computer? Which is going to be brought in, in the next few years. AND please don't be naive and say this won't happen it's already going through.

For the 'I think the TV licence is good' people go to the link below.
Boy have you hit a raw nerve.

They have the address of every one who does not have a licence.
You will be found out.
And the TV van detector is just a myth.
