For those who have left home, did you have any instructions for cooking or recipes from your mum before you left, are you self taught in the kitchen, or do you make do with take away and frozen meals?
Thanks guys - I appreciate your input - just a little research I'm doing for a project

A bit over 30, but when I was 30 this was still true.
When I was a kid, I was usually so hungry for dinner that I would hang out in the kitchen with mom while she cooked. My purpose was to snatch as much as I could before dinner to tide me over. She started to insist that if I was going to hang out, I was going to help so I did.
When I was 16, I started working in restaurants (NOT on the McDonald's level). At the beginning, all kitchen work.
Years later, my friends are always begging me to cook - especially in the wok. I suppose at this point, I'm self taught, but then again, I'm not afraid of ruining something, burning or cutting myself (got some mad knife skills at this point).
That's I think the difference between people who cook and people who eat 'easy' stuff. Fear - I'm hungry and if I screw up, I'll waste a bunch of food and still be hungry, why bother? I just got lucky I guess in never being in a position of having to worry about that while I was learning the basics.
This is not to say I don't have a few frozen pizza in the freezer, I just don't live off them as a staple. :)
Hey, just thought of something - cooking is a good bartering tool. I have a friend that is pretty good with cars. I'll get him all watery mouth talking about steaks and what not then tell him if he changes my oil, checks fluids, checks my tires and what not - light tune up, I'll make surf and turf for he an his wife.
He has always said yes to that. His wife is the one who really makes out though. All she has to do is monitor our beers and her own drink so nobody runs out. lol
The interesting thing is HE is by far the better cook of the two. When he was stationed in Iraq, you should have seen the stuff she was eating - take out, frozen all the time.
Times are certainly a' changen.

Hmm. Well I was a raised in a home were you had to help out around the house and that included helping to cook. So I was taught by my parents. but no I rarely cook anything I make do with bread and lunchmeat most of the time. and yes I'm 22 and have 2 roomates both males, one of wich is a fantastic cook, though he doesn't cook much either.

Im 21 I moved out when I was 18 to go to Penn State and me and my room mates best friend is pasta. Very limited cooking skills in this house. We call our mom alot with kitchen questions and look up stuff online but at the end of the day take out is usally the best option.

When my dad lived on his own when he was dating my mom, he made frozen dinners and Hamburger Helper. This was even when she came over to eat at his house. My mother hates that stuff now. He cooks dinner from scrach almost every night know. Makes up the recipes on his own. They're really good.

I learnt a few recipes from my mom and refer to a cookbook. Of course, there is no option but to eat take away/ frozen meal after a long day at work :)

My husband was 24 when I first met him. Most of what he had in his fridge/freezer was stuff his mom had made for him and sent home. He also had a lot of "convenience" foods: Mac & Cheese, TV Dinners, stuff like that..
He ate a lot of pasta and rice as well.
I know I'm not exactly who you expected to hear from, but I thought I'd tell you what he WAS eating when I met him. Maybe it'll help.
