It's not only the bleeding that kills them.

First, the blood that they bleed quickly fills the bucket of water, and fish really can't breathe well in a bucket of blood-water.

And also, many fish are too tired at the end when you finally reel them in. That's also why if you release a fish directly into water after catching it, it will die. You have to grab the fish and move it forward and back through the water so the gills get oxygen, and then it will get away.

You probably hooked the fish deep down the throat, and injured it when you removed the hook.

Water in a bucket doesn't contain much oxygen, so it probably was helped to die from lack of oxygen.

The combination of the 2 and probably rough handling when removing the hook were the cause of death.

It depends on where you hooked the fish. A regulation catch through the lip shouldn't cause substantial bleeding, if any. Also, are you sure they didn't die of O2 deprivation in the bucket rather than bleeding to death?

Well, you answered your own question. The bled to death. The other option is they suffocated. There's only so much oxygen in a bucket of water. For a big fish, about five minutes worth.

Did you rip the hook out? or did you carefully remove it? What kind of fish and why were you putting them into a bucket? The only way they bleed to death is because you ripped the hook out of their gullett.

Sometimes the hook is swallowed and bringing it out of their "throat" causes them to bleed at times and they will bleed to death eventually. This only happens in 1 out of 20 fish let's say and that is why people say "we had to keep this one".

They don't die when you just hook them in the side of the mouth, we normally have to bonk them on the head when we fish them if we are planning to take them home with us, they only die when they swallow the hook, when you pry the hook out, it tears up their insides, making them bleed to death quickly.

Eh..that has never happened to me before...u really must be taking out the hook to roughly...for them to BLEED to death. Try to be more gentle...do you use your bare hands to remove the hook? (Meaning do you use a cloth to put around the fish so they dont slip around when you are trying to take the hook out..and pliars to remove the hook?) My dad does that sometimes (the pilars) when the hook is really in there...

probably because for a while still they have no water when you are taking the fish hook out. and also probably because half of there body is bleeding so they end up dieing. I mean if half our bodys were bleeding then we'd go to the hospital but there is no fish hospital, lol!

Hi, most fish die when they are touched! They have a film over there scales that protect them. Watch catch and release fisherman, (pro's) and you will see they try not to touch the fish out of water
