How do I get my web page to show up in a Google search?

I have a site on Geocities and I was wondering how can I get it to show up when I search on Google or Yahoo? I think that would be cool if it did.

To get your site to come up in Google searches you need to submit your site url to Google. You can just do a standard submit or you can check out the other pay options.

Google uses Googlebot to crawl the Web. Web pages link to each other and automatic search engine spiders follow those links. Google uses PageRank to find out which web sites are interesting, popular and/or important enough to get indexed by Google:

That's why incoming links to your web site are important. You also need to follow Google's guidelines for webmasters or otherwise you may get penalized (rank lower than you would if your pages were not penalized) or even banned (none of your pages are indexed by Google):
