You use feeler gauges to check the clearance between the reed and reed cage they mount to.There should be zero clearance.You can remove the reeds and bend them slightly to inspect for cracks.

These 2 answers are very good. For just a quick check. Hold the reed block up to the light. You shouldn't be able to see through where the reeds touch the block.

If you go through the trouble to pull the reed block out you may as well disassemble the reed block and hold them in your hand and see if they are cracked.

Welding aluminum is a lot harder than metallic, and the swingarm is a lower than pressure section. those do no longer make for good odds of having a sturdy restoration, and on aluminum even good welds have a tendency to crack.
