i want to transfer my i-tunes collection from my desktop to my laptop computer. what is the easiest way to do this?

The best way would be to network them, create 'shared' folders and move the files over. This would probably also be the fastest way, but can get a little complicated.
The least expensive way to network two computers is with a Crossover Cable. A crossover is a unique type of cat-5 cable that can link two computers directly to eachother without any other hardware. Create shared folders on both computers once the crossover is in place and you should be able to drag and drop the files.
You could create data DVD's or CD's, which would transfer the files and also make a backup of your collection. Burn the disc(s), copy files into the laptop and voila.

Depending on the file size, you may also be able to use a pen drive (aka thumb drive, flash drive, jump drive). This is a small device that plugs in to your USB port and acts like a small hard drive. You can get a low capacity (less than 200 MB) drive for about $15, and a 2GB drive for maybe around 40-60. The nice thing about these drives is that they are re-usable, reliable, and can often attach to your keychain for convenience. DVD burning isn't a bad idea either, as it ensures that you will always have a copy of the file available, even if your computer fails. And DVD's are cheap. Burners are not as cheap as a pen drive though, so if you don't have the burner, go for the pen drive.

If you already have a home network, use it. You can turn on file and printer sharing on one pc, and see it in Network Neighborhood on the other.
If you don't, the best way is to use a "direct connect ethernet cable" that will allow you to link the two computers via their network cards.
If one or both of your computers do not have a network card, laplink sells a usb direct connect cable and the software you need to make it work for file transfers.

Buy an external hard drive. For under $100 you should be able to find one that will hold 40 gig or more, if I'm remembering right. It's also the best way to back things up. CD's and floppies can become damaged and don't hold as much, just like flash drives.

A cat5e Ethernet cable is the simplest cost effective way. You will have to hook the cable cable up to both pc's in the same room. If pc's are in different locations and you can't move them then a flash drive can work just as well.

since you want to use the files for both computers.yes network is the way to go. but if you want make it so you can use the mp3s on any computer .your laptop,friends,etc....simply use a external usb hard drive and you can move it aywhere,just buy plugging in the usb to the right computer.external drivers are cheap now.
