The first gear you need is knowledge. At minimum take a storm spotter course from your local NWS office, also read up on storm climatology and severe storm processes and forecasting techniques.
When I chase, sometimes I don't have any equipment with me. When I'm out for long periods of time, I usually have a thermometer and hygrometer set, an anemometer, and a map. If you can, get high resolution maps and have a buddy with you who can serve as navigator. Have a NOAA all-hazards weather radio for updates on the situation, watches, and warnings.
You don't need a satellite for internet data, since usually you have to stop to use these anyway. Use the internet in the morning at a hotel (usually free) to decide the setup and where to go. Sometimes it helps to have someone back home that can call you with updates. However, you might want to invest in a radar feed. I know Baron supplies one. With GPS you can plot your position on top of the radar. It's a monthly description and you'll need a laptop computer for it.
Also get some ham radio training or a cell phone and know how to contact the local NWS office. If you aren't chasing for research reasons you better serve as a spotter. Also, drive carefully and be respectful of other people. If you see someone's house get destroyed, don't yell in celebration. Be knowledgable and respectful of the weather. Storm chasers have gotten a bad rep in the past ten years from people who have no respect for the weather and just want their ten minutes of fame on the TV.

If you have to ask this question, you are not prepared to be a storm chaser. why not take a storm chaser tour, check it out on the internet. There is a lot to learn and failure to do so could lead to your early demise.

Basically, what you would want is a set of portable versions of the items listed on this page.
