I have had plenty of other MP3 players, and by far the IPOD is the best! I am not a devoted machead, but the product has really won me over. Yes you can only use Itunes to upload music to your Ipod, but you can load ANY mp3 onto it. The only thing that makes it proprietary is when you buy songs from Itunes, only those have limitations. Also, when you are ripping your CD collection to Itunes, make sure you go in the settings and set it to "MP3" instead of ACC or Apple Lossless, these are proprietary file formats that could run into problems with other programs. As far as Yahoo music unlimited, ask Yahoo, I have never used it before.
In summary, the IPod is popular for more reasons than simply being well marketed. It is user friendly and of high quality and it looks awesome. I hope that this helps your buying decision.

I received an iPod as gift.
Not impressed.
You can't just copy your music over to it, it must be loaded with iTunes. If you copy your music to it manually it just ignores it as it is not listed in the humanly unreadable iTunes database file.
Worse still, when "properly" loaded onto the ipod nearly all of my mp3's that play on my laptop and on my Nokia N70 without issue are listed in the play list but won't actually play.
Beware, if you buy an iPod you are condemned to iTunes.
If you already use iTunes exclusively as your music player/organiser/ripper then the iPod is a great little gadget, otherwise choose a competitor's product.
If you are using an older iPod you can trying making it more usable, functional and capable of more file formats here:

Its a matter of choice, But Ipods have been receiving some bad publicity lately. Cracked screens, faulty audio, and definitely bad after sales service. I eventually gave up on mine and bough a Palm Zire 72. Direct from USA for $AUD250 I have had Palm Products before and I must say they are excellent compared to Ipod and the after sales service is top class.
Check out the Palm products on their site, then go to Ebay and select one of the Palm products being offered to Australians (rudy) who is very good to deal with also.
Give Ipod the flick, after all its another microsft product really now that they own apple!

sure i imagine the iPod contact is nicely worth it. i'm at the moment searching at 3 diverse instruments for a transportable, multipurpose, multimedia information superhighway pill for myself. the three that i'm searching at are the iPod contact, the Nokia N810 information superhighway pill, and HP iPAQ 210 organisation living house windows cellular PDA; all indexed it in my order of selection. all of them have their strengths and their weaknesses, yet in and of themselves they each and each are unique, fantastic, functional instruments with a large number of headroom for upgradeability. regrettably all of them do not have all the efficient factors that i want yet they do come close. as far because the iPod contact 32GB is going it has the suitable multimedia capacity both audio and video. And it has the suitable information superhighway journey. in case you truly had to, you also ought to apply it as a Skype telephone with the further headset / microphone mix. It also has the suitable gaming journey in evaluation to the Nokia and the HP instruments that I had said. the reason i ought to guage the Nokia N810 information superhighway pill, is because it truly is 0.5 the fee of the iPod contact 32GB. And the reason i ought to guage the HP iPAQ 210, is because it truly is an entire fledged PDA organizer with living house windows workplace cellular (be conscious, Excel, skill factor, get proper of entry to) with the reduce, reproduction and paste efficient factors that i want for both own and organisation applications. From a in reality exciting factor of view i ought to p.c.. the iPod contact 32GB, plus the App keep works all proper. From a in reality a organisation factor of view i ought to p.c.. the HP iPAQ 210. From a in reality geeky factor of view i ought to p.c.. the Nokia N810 information superhighway pill, because i love tinkering and Linux – dare to be diverse.
