Differences were many. Athens was a democracy--every man had a vote in policy; Sparta was an oligarchy--a select few ruled over the bulk of the population (helots) which were basically slaves. Athens was expansionist; Sparta was isolationist. athens had a dynamic literary and intellectual scene; Sparta never really nurtured new ideas. Athens treated women as a notch above slaves; Spartan women were treated very respectfully.
Probably many more.

Sparta was famous for it's military prowess. It was a society based completely around training and preparing for war. Athens was the birthplace of philosophy, democracy, and had a heavy interest in arts and drama. Their navy was very strong, but when the two city-states eventually fought each other, the Spartans prevailed.
