first you need to check the documentation for your DSL modem regarding the built in DHCP server function. you may only need to get a workgoup switch.

You need to pick up a Router to run more than one computer off the same modem. I was going to try to do the samething as you but after I called my Cable company and they recommended a D-Link brand Router.A Router will basically split the signal into two or more signals so that the computers can be on the same network at the same time.
The simplest and cheapest way is to buy a wired router, then all you need is the LAN cables to hook up the computers. You can also go Wireless but with wireless both computers need to have a "wireless network adapter card" which will cost you a bit more money but you wont have ugly cables running around your house.

No. A modem must either inside a computer or external, but you can't connect another computer to it or share it. But you can get a network router and share an internet connection. The thing is, the connection will be slower when both computers are using the internet at the same time.
