"Texted" is most widely accepted as the past tense of "text", however a "text" is not techically a verb, or action. It is a noun, or a thing. The action you are performing is not "texting", but "sending". You are sending (action) a text message (thing). Pop culture, as it so often does, has placed an extra definition onto a word. If you are looking to properly phrase a sentence in the past tense about "texting" it would be "sent a text message". But I doubt anyone will argue with you if you said "texted". Hope that helps.
