My broadband connection through my isp, Transact, in Australia seems slow despite being on a 2 gb download plan. I was just wondering is there any way for the average homeowner to drammatically increase their actual (not theoretical) Internet speeds? How about installing a router?

Imean download and upload speed. it seems to download around 40-60 kbs which i think seems abit slow considering it's theoretical speed is supposed to be 2 gb. I have 256 mb ram. i use windows 2000 but am considering moving to linux.

the first answer said he uses a "router hub". how did that increase your download speed to 7 gb?

it could be several reasons why you received slow internet connection, because you connect from the home connection, i suspect it cause by a bottleneck connection where your internet speed from your home to your ISP is 2gb but from that ISP to the other ISP (ISP's ISP) have less than that

i think, you can see if you get an increasing speed during the offpeak hour, means that more bandwidth were set to burst to your connection

and i don't think installing a router is an answer
you need to verify the actual bandwidth you can get from your ISP

A router is only necessary if you have wireless, or more than one computer hooked up to one ISP. It won't make your broadbaod run any faster. And you mentioned internet speed. Do you mean download speed, connection speed, upload speed, what? If you want more surfing speed, try Google's Web Accelerator. It's only for broadband, and it will speed it up some. I've used it for almost a year and noted a difference.

I have 7GB with a router hub at my home, and i am just as fast here as i am at work. I can even connect into my work server fast.
