That's a personal call, my son weaned at about 13 months. We had been down to about once or twice a day shortly before then and he eventually stopped on his own.

I am facing the same delima. I Have a 9 month old and have been working full time since he was 4 weeks old. I have decided to nurse a little longer than a year even if that means only feeing twice a day. I work 12 hour shifts 3 days a week and so my milk supply is low so we have to supplement with formula when i don't have enough. I work at the hospital and that it is good that he gets the immunities that I am exposed to so he will have a better immune system. I would try to do it as long as possible even if it is once in the morning and once at night. At least they are getting the "good stuff" a little bit. Best of luck!

When and only when you and or your baby are ready to. There is no right time, for everyone. Your lifestyle could play a role in that decision. If you are a stay home mom, and it doesn't interfere with everyday life, then nurse as long as you want to. Some people nurse their children until they are 5, me never! I nursed, until they were about one year. I have 5. I cherished that bonding with each child. My last child was adopted from China, and had just turned 2 when we adopted her, hence I didn't nurse her, but that made me sad, that I wasn't going to have that bonding time with her that I did with my other children. They are only little once, every day that passes, you can't get back, so you cherish your time with your baby, and the bond that you are creating. Your heart, and motherly instict will tell you when the time is right to wean. Happy Nursing and God Bless!

it makes me sad to see people are saying after a certain time it is no good to feed your child.
Breastfeeding is the best thing for babies. You shouldnt stop at a certain age just because people tell you the baby doesnt benefit anymore. The baby will always benefit from breastfeeding.
I beastfeed my first daughter till she was 21months, she started to wean herself and I needed a break as I was pregnant with number two due in a couple of months. My second daughter I feed till 2 and a half. i only stopped feeding her as it was getting awkward for me.
The best thing to do is feed your baby as long as baby is happy and you are happy. It creates such a wonderful bond between you. Its not gross, its what your breasts were made for.
Good Luck and I hope you breastfeed for as long as possible.

The World Health Organization recommends nursing for 2 years. The AAP recommends AT LEAST one year. Even after one year of age your milk is still better than cows' milk. It is lower in sodium, confers antibodies to sicknesses, and the fat content changes to reflect your child's changing needs. The iron is breastmilk is in a form tha tis far easier for a child to absorb.

You should nurse for at least a year, and then wean when you and your child are ready.

I say if you breastfeed at all, then 6-9 months, but no longer than that. I don't plan on breastfeeding at all because I think that it is gross, but that is just me. I think as soon as the baby wants solid foods and is eating them ok and getting enough nutrients from them, then stop. I stopped at 8 months old. My mom wanted to breastfeed me for a long time and I guess I had enough-I stopped breastfeeding on her and got up and started walking in the same day! My mom was in for quite a shock!

One year is what most doctors say. I know my doctor did it until her boys were two. I would say no more than 3 years old. Every so often you read of kids like 5 years old and older getting it but then you can be charged with child abuse I think. There really are health benifits at first but eventually it gets to the point where you are just doing mental and nutritional harm.

When you feel like it, or when the baby naturally weans.

Most experts will agree that you should breastfeed your baby for a year to get the maximum benefits for you both.

However, if you plan on drinking alcohol or taking certain drugs (whether over the counter, prescription, or even street drugs), you should not breastfeed. Your doc can tell you what drugs are "safe" for a breastfeeding mother.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends nursing for AT LEAST one year and then after that if mom and baby wants to do so. They state that there are no negative effects to nursing into the third year and even beyond.

The World Health Organization recommends nursing at least 2 years.

Well mostly its up to you. But my aunt just had a baby and the doctor said after 6 months you should put the baby on a bottle. But all babys are different and it depends when your baby will drink out of the bottle. When you switch at first the baby will fuss and not want the bottle, but you have to keep trying.
