Now, I will admit that I have never been a prostitute, nor do I think I ever will be, but I'll willing to speculate on the issue.

The other answers are good answers, I definitely think that is a factor. I can see there being a father issue or unresolved Electra complex at play here, but I think there's something else to it as well.

We as humans survive. That's what we do above all. Generally speaking, you are more likely to see prostitution in lower income communities, which are also generally more dangerous places to be, especially for a young girl. By having sex with other people and giving the money to an older man, you are buying protection from him in an area where you most likely need protection in some form. Is it unfortunate? Yes. But I can understand the logic if a young girl feels she has no other options.

In a word "Daddy Issues".

They were probably abandoned by their biological father, who was probably an abusive man, and their mom dated a series of other abusive men. Probably at some point, either dad, or mom's boyfriend, or an uncle, or a brother or a male cousin sexually molested them too.

So, they enter the adolecent world desperately seeking male approval - and trying to win the approval of the very same kind of physically, sexually and emotionally abusive men that abandoned and abused them as kids.

That's why they hook up with pimps, and agree to prostitute themselves and give all the money to "daddy" (that's what a lot of these girls actually call their pimps!)
