to determine the paths of comets and other objects in case they might come within striking distance of the earth. to see if events in the past can be linked with astronomical data known today (Haley's comet for example.

At the very least it is a good idea to know where things in space are so when an asteroid comes hurtling toward the earth, we'll know about it before it happens.

We take observing logs when we use telescopes to remember what we looked at when for how long and in which filter. So we can process them correctly.
