I've had great success with this trap in my house:
http://veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=266
It’s also available for $2 cheaper here (although I prefer to buy it from the other place since I’m not a big fan of PETA):
https://www.petacatalog.org/prodinfo.asp?number=HP200
I've caught over ten mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here:
http://www.helpinganimals.com/wildlife_livingWithMice.asp
If you do live trap mice, please be sure to check the traps several times a day and release the mice promptly, approximately a mile away from your home. It is much more cruel to allow a mouse in a live trap to slowly starve to death than to kill it quickly with a snap trap. When you release the mice, do it in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants. If you are a kind person, you might also leave a little bird seed or oatmeal for them and some shredded paper towels for bedding.
Just so other people know, the absolute cruelest traps are glue traps. Mice have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. It can take three to five days for them to die. Poison isn't any better, as the mice die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding. It can take up to a week for them to die, and then they smell as they rot behind your walls.
Thanks for wanting to be kind to the mouse! :) Good luck!

I electrocute them ... I was overrun and over about 3 months I killed over 25 before the waves stopped. And you better get rid of them because even though you don't see it ... they PEE -- and poop -- everywhere and I do mean EVERYWHERE they go. I'd find poop inside my knife drawer because the top of it was not sealed under the counter, even though there was never any food in there. But what I couldn't see was that each time they peed all over my knives, so I had to wash every knife, and sanitize the drawer every gosh darn time!!!!!
It's a $25 trap by Victor (www.victorpest.com) - quick, painless, no blood, high kill rate. You can buy it at Ace Hardware or on Ebay.
But if that offends you -they also make a "have a heart" style trap that "collects" the mice in a big shoe box like thing, and it's up to you to release them somewhere (hopefully far away - but not near me please - or maybe you have a friend with a snake who will gladly take them off your hands .. lol) before they starve and go cannibal. Local stores don't have this, but check the Victor web site or Ebay.
The bait traps work well, but I couldn't take ANY risk my dog would accidentally find it, and they do die in your walls and attics (the mice not your pets, they would just die or get real real sick for at least a month because the bait is Warfarin which in high enough concentration causes animals to bleed to death inside. It is the same drug as Coumadin that is given to human blood clot victims who have had heart attacks and such).
Spring traps, glue traps, "box traps", etc.... all have problems with mess and gore and are less effective. So I go with the electronic one - quick deadly and the only mess is the pee the mice leave on the outside when they are roaming around before they go in.
PS Where you see one, there are certainly more, usually a breeding pair and at least a litter of babies.

Get a mouse trap and put some cheese in it and then you can catch the mouse that way. That is the only way I know how to catch a mouse.

buy a cat. use an old fashioned trap why do you want to be humane to the damn thing unless its a pet then they have some that when the mouse gets in it, it throws it off balance and moves which shuts the door and hes trapped in there alive and well unless he starves to death, another way is to take a bucket with holes in the side..put a dowel of wood through a peanbutter jar or whatever, and put so its like a running wheel inside the bucket..put peanut butter on the 'wheel' and fill the bucket with water..and a ramp up to the top of the outside of the bucket..he will dive in after the food and whoop..drown!!

There are humane moustraps that lure the mouse inside and then trap them alive and well.
But I find mousetraps work best. SNAP and the mouse is gone!
P.S. Cheese is a common misconception. Chocolate works 10 times better.

No need to be humane. These rodents are disgusting and filthy.
Use bacon, or peanut butter on a trap. Another way thats more humane is soda in a bowl. They cannot burp like humans and they bloat up and die. The only thing is that when you poison mice you don't know thet died until you smell them. That scent never goes away.

a mouse trap w/ peanut butter on it. The rodent will not feel a thing when the bar snaps down and shatters it's neck.

Just don't use a glue trap if he walk on it and tries to get off he'll rip his feet off and bleed to death. I alway look to the size 15 Work Boot.
