I tried the monitor adjustments but cannot get the black to go away at the bottom of the screen. Help. The whole screen is distorted now.

This can eitehr be your video adapter or your monitor. You'll have to try anther monitor to rule out that the monitor is actually defective.

First, try resetting the monitor back to its factory settings. Most all computer monitors have an onscreen menu these days and have an option in the menu to reset. If after doing this, the problem does not improve, I would swap the monitor for a different one to rule out the monitor as being the cause of the problem. If the problem goes away when you do this then you need a new monitor. If the problem persists then you need a new video card for your computer.

Your graphics/video card (the one the monitor plugs into) has given up the ghost. Buy a new one.
