For instance he had freinds in the area, internet access, cell phone, and the thing that stood out to me was the lip piercing ...seriously if you were kidnapped and being held against your will would piercings really be a top priority??

Im not blaming him, these are just things running through my mind. I think anyone who has to go through something like that is very brave. As we all know none of us but the ones that were there know the truth. All im saying is there are details to this story that will never be said.

First of all you have no clue what that kidnapper told the boy when he abducted him. You don't know what kind of life he led while in custody of that man. Until details of this case come out you should not blame this boy that was taken and held for nearly 5 years. I just cannot believe people these days...there was a kidnapped child found, he wasn't tortured, he wasn't dead...he was alive and healthy...can't you just be thankful!

I thought that was a little strange too, at first. Then I thought, Shawn was only 11 when he was kidnapped. A lot of time has passed. Who knows what that man told him, when he was first abducted. I read an article about the psychology of a kidnapped child. This is the gist of it:
Many kidnappers threaten to harm the child's family or friends if they try to escape or make contact. So, not knowing any better, the child complies. As time goes by, the child begins to "adjust" to his/her new life. They begin to think it's normal and that they need their abductor and that the abductor needs them. Some even defend the abductor when they're finally caught. We have to remember that this is the only life he's known for the past 4+ years.

I'm no detective, but I felt the same way yesterday when I saw him on Tv. He sure didn't look happy. I thought I saw a piercing, but I thought I was seeing things. I mean people who are in captivity don't get the opportunity to go get piercings right? If he had a cell phone why didn't he call his mother? He looks more worried for his captor than himself. The other boy was all smiles. Did he have a different experience? He didn't exactly look like a boy who was just saved from an evil man. I guess maybe we just don't get it. Maybe in the coming weeks someone will shed some light as to why these two were acting out of character.

This is a question that does not to deserved to be answered. Lets all start blaming a kid that was kidnapped at age 11. Damn, he should have known exactly what to do at age 11.
How about we say what a miracle it is for him to be alive, thank you, god. The things this has done mentally to this kid can never be undone. By the grace of god it could have been my kid or yours and what a nightmare to live through.

Psychological abuse is every bit as strong as physical...if not stronger. Just look at wives who live under an abusive husband for years and years. And this boy was just a kid when abducted. He doesn't even have the maturity to look at this from an adult perspective. We have already heard reports of neighbors who say there were frequent sounds of arguments and fighting coming from their apartment. We simply can't judge until we hear the whole story.

My thought were "what did the man who held him tell him about his parents?" or "what was he allowed to do in that man's home that wasn't allowed at his parent's home?"
As for the lip piercing - what better way to get a kid's trust than to give them everything they want. No rules , no punishment , the belief everything is your way. What did this "man" get in return for giving Shawn a grand fantasy that the child had total control.

I think it is a very weird case. What I do not understand is that he had soo much freedom yet did not make contact with anyone. When he was abducted he was 11 yrs old. I feel that is old enough to do something than just sit there.

I just wish they would be honest with the public and let us know what to look out for. I am a mother and this makes me sick to know that somebody took someone's child. But I would be irrate if I found out that these boys contacted this man and wanted to run away. I am not assuming that, I am hoping that isn't the case.
