G'day, does anyone know how to raise and reproduce whiteworms? What habitant and box is best for them? Is daily bread for them sufficient? Do they need parenting worms to produce a culture? Any extras I should know?

I cultured white worms in an apartment size refrigerator(solely dedicated to the task) turned down to its lowest(warmest) setting. I used "sweater boxes",plastic boxes about 14"x9"x3"(mainly because they fit in the cooler). As to media I used a product from a bait shop called worm bedding, also peat moss from a garden center(it's hard to find peat that is pure, with no additives, like wetting agents or fertilizers).I can't recall some of the ones that failed, but there were many. Plain white bread was OK for food,I'd add about 1/3 of a slice, moistened with a little water. The worms, once the culture got up and running, would consume this in about three days,so it never spoiled. Part of the knack of worm cultures is predicting when they will crash and getting a second one started, before every one kicks. There is an out of print book, published by Tropical Fish Hobbyist Magazine that is most informative in these matters. It's called The Encyclopedia of Live Foods. It describes methods of raising all sorts of creepy crawlys and how to feed them to what ever you have that will eat them. Hope this is of some help. As to acquiring cultures it's best to mail order them from laboratory suppliers or fellow hobbyists. Collecting from the wild(there are hundreds of species to be found in "leaf mold" in moist woods) risks contamination by whatever else is lying about. Don't be discouraged if at first you don't succeed. The fat content in white worms will condition fish for breeding in very short order. PeeTee------- Say,was that an Aussie accent?
