As long as you eat a balanced diet (meat, vegs, carbs, dairy), you can take a multivitamin even when you are pregnant. One-A-Day for Women is an excellent multivitamin to take.

I tried taking prenatal vitamins and I found out I was allergic to Iron supplements. My doctor told me that I would get enough iron and vitamins from the One-A-Day Women's vitamin that they sell at the store. The rest that you don't get from the multivitamin you will get from a balanced diet.

You don't need to spend a lot of money on prenatal vitamins if you don't want to.

You do not need a prescription. You can buy them at any drugstore. Also doctors will write a prescription for them (if there are any that still need one) if you ask.

However most prenatal vitamins contain an almost toxic level of iron and shouldn't be taken by anyone, particularly if you are not pregnant, but even when you are. Iron is very dangerous and if you ask any doctor about taking an iron suppliment when not pregnant/trying to get pregnant they will advise caution.

Take a folic acid suppliment, or better yet eat more foods rich in folic acid such as leafy green vegetables. Or take a suppliment like alfalfa, green plus, etc.

However bread, flour, cereal, etc, etc are all fortified with folic acid

Call your doctor and get a prescription. It is actually recommended for women to take prenatal vitamins before they conceive. The folic acid in them is especially important in the first couple of weeks of pregnancy (before most know they're pregnant). Most doctors will even give you samples to cover the first few weeks. It also doesn't hurt to inform your doctor that you are trying to get pregnant. She may want you to get a pap smear or dental cleaning or other health related issue done before getting pregnant. Good luck to you.

Hey...It's very important you start taking prenatals....Alot of doctors say you should take them three months before you start trying...It's important to have your system full of Folic Acid...It helps reduce the chances of your baby having any defects...You can buy these at walmart, walgreens...etc...Sometimes there is different brands...just pick the ones that have the most folic acid in them! This is what my gyn says! Good luck i'm trying too

Yeah. You need to get started on the vitamins as soon as you want to have a baby. You can buy them over the counter, or your doctor can prescribe them for you.

If you want prescription ones from your doctor you can ask them. You SHOULD take them for 3-6 months before getting pregnant because it cuts back on certain birth defects.
