Actually, whether or not the amount of items on your desktop affects the speed of your computer depends on the operating system you are running. For example, more than 14 individual icons on the desktop of a machine running Windows XP will have an affect on the speed of the system. My reccommendation is to make a 'Utilities' or 'Shortcuts' file and put most of your desktop icons in that file. To answer the side question, no, items in the recycle bin have nothing to do with speed - though you should empty it often. The best ways to speed up a computer are: a) Make sure it is free of spyware and adware using a program such as Spybot: Search and Destroy b) Delete unnecessary programs using the ad/remove programs under the control panel (assuming you're using Windows) c) Run Disk Defragmenter on a regular basis(at least weekly if you do a lot of downloading) d) Make sure that you don't have too many programs running when you start your computer. Most programs have an option to run at startup - stuff like instant messaging. Hope this helps!!!

You know the Windows wizard that does this just isn't the brightest thing on the planet.

For one, your computer is not going to be any faster. The program might be related to Picasa for Goole. Do an Internet search and see what it comes up with. I got a few results.
