The guy's (Tom Hanks) dad was a really big jazz fan so he collected all his favorite artists' autographs and kept them in the can. His dad had all but one autograph but he died before getting it. So thats why Hanks was in New York, to fulfill the promise to his dad to get the final autograph.

It was full of autographs of Jazz singers from an old photograph that his father had. His father collected all of the autographs through various letters that he sent to the musicians but he passed away before he could get the last one. Victor needed to go to New York to the Ramada so he could get the last autograph to complete his promise to his father that he would get it.

at the end he got the final autograph for his father because his dad had written to like forty Jazz musicians for autographs and onle one didn't write back.
