I am wanting to have wireless Internet for my laptop, but I do not have a desktop. As I am sure you are aware, I am not very computer savy. I would imagine that I could just get a wireless router and hook it directly to a modem. Is this the case? Can you suggest a good wireless router, and is it possible to get a router that would send a signal 100 yards? Like for instance, so my neighbors could pick up the signal.

You can just get an ethernet cable and connect it to the back of your laptop and configure the wireless settings from there.

I recommend wireless access points from Linksys.

The further away you are from the access point, the more your signal will deteriorate. If that is the case and your house is THAT big, I suggest getting some WiFi extenders to boost your signal throughout the home.

Good luck with it, buddy!

If you live near someone who has a wireless connection, it is possible to piggyback off their signal without a router. Just like you would go to Starbucks and bring your laptop to access the internet there. In fact, about 2 months ago, my internet was down at home and my son needed the internet for a homework assignment. So we sat in the truck in the Starbucks' parking lot and connected to the internet from there! One warning though, if you do any on-line banking, a wireless connection is not as secure as a desktop.

A few things first: 1. Most wireless networks are secure, meaning they require a key to access them. You probably won't be able to pick up ANY signals anyways. 2. Chances are you will NOT be able to pick up any unsecured signals, unless you know for a fact that your neighbor has an unsecure network or someone nearby has one. 3. Probably illegal? If you still want to try, you're going to need a Wireless PCI Adapter, and if you have Windows XP, it will automatically detect wireless networks. If you don't know how to install hardware, e.g. the PCI card, ask Best Buy or similar retailer to do it (for a fee, of course).

Install a wireless card to your PC and see if there are any signals nearby that YOU can pick up. Why pay if you can borrow access?

This works best in the cities, obviously.

you do not need to have any computer connected to the router using wires to have a wireless connection. You might need to wire your laptop to the router the first time to do the setup, but after that no....
