Sounds like the hard drive is bad. Your option is to get a new hard drive and find your restore CD. I also dearly hope that you burned a restore CD when you first booted your computer, lest, you have lost everything. That is unless, they actually provided you with restore CDs (which is less common these days). If they didn't then you had a restore partition on your hard drive that would have restored your system. In these cases, usually on first boot, it gives you the option to burn restore CDs. If you didn't... well, you've lost everything. I'm not saying that SOME data can't be recovered but your operating system is toast, that's for sure.
You'll need to get a new hard drive but you can forget about being able to transfer anything to it from the old hard drive, at least easily.
If you don't have the restore CDs then you'll have to get both a new hard drive and a copy of Windows XP. Of course... you'll have to get the right kind of drive... SATA or IDE and for that you'll have to check your manual or the specs online. You will need a 2.5" Internal laptop hard drive (once you know what kind) the best place to buy it is Newegg, http://www.newegg.com/ and I really wouldn't trust the Geek Squad to install it, find the neighborhood computer geek and let him/her do it for you. I would just install it myself but this is what I do for a living, more or less.
Shawn, for the sake of everyone's sanity stop posting all your achievements, it's dreadfully annoying, fine, yes, you're accomplished but you have to prove to me (and everyone else) that you have the talent in addition to the degrees, okay?

Ok without your computer on a test bench I can't be postive. But if I were betting, I'd say:
Your Hard Disk Drive (HDD) has failed and will need to be replaced.
Your computer will not work until this is done.
If your laptop is under warranty contact the service agent.
If not you will need to either pay for a HDD and the installation or have a knowledgeable friend do this for you.
You may be able to recover your "stuff" but this will complicate things
Cost of a HDD is about Au$180.00 +/-. Installation and setup of Windows will be extra.

When you first turn the notebook on there should be a key to press to enter the BIOS setup. Press the key and a settings screen will load.
You'll have to look at various options such as Startup and Devices to see if the hard disk is being detected.
The problem could be simple or complex.
If you cannot resolve the problem yourself, you'll have to take the notebook to a service center or call the manufacturer.

I'm glad to see that i am not the only one that is "electronically challenged" I have no idea what the trouble is.! Every time I screw up my comp I call my oldest kid, who has a hell of a sense of humor, and he straightens it out for me..He laughs like hell ! I get the comp locked out every now and then. Don't know what I did. Obviously you are following the same methods I use. Good luck.!!
