Rarely with intensive NICU care a baby at 26 weeks can survive. It's like a 25% chance tho :( :( Full term babies are 37 weeks. Anything less and anything can happen. Babies born before term are at a greater risk for infection, don't have their proper reflexes developed to learn to feed or breath on their own. They are of low birthweight, can die from things like jaundice.... 35 week old babies have an 85% chance to survive with NICU care... that's all I know though.

There isn't a certain time frame that a child can be born and still survive. It all depends on how developed the baby is, how strong the baby is, if there were any complications during delivery, what made the baby be born early, trauma to the mother etc. But if a baby is born early, you need to have faith that he/she will survive and you need to talk to the baby and hold it (if possible). Good luck with everything. By the way my husband is a twin and was born at 26 or 27 wks, he survived and he was just over 3lbs when he was born, he could fit in the palm of your hand. And he is completly healthy.

There are documented cases of infants as young as 21 weeks surviving. The age of widely accepted age of viability for a fetus is 24 weeks gestation. If the baby were born now she would still be considered a 'micro-premie' most likely unable to breathe unassisted and would need medications to regulate her body. She would be in the NICU for weeks (months)
Survival of neonates is widely varied and depends on many factors. The baby's weight, the health of the baby, the reason for delivery, the method of delivery, the gender of the baby (for an unknown reason girls have a better chance then boys as severly premature infants) etc. Some babies born at 24 weeks thrive in life with no long-term effects while some born at 35 weeks die.
Short answer, your baby now has an excellent fighting chance if born near a medical facility equipped for such young patience. Good luck and read up on the signs of premature labor.

My friend had her baby at 26 weeks. There were a lot of complications, and the baby only weighed 2 lbs. She had to remain in the NICU for 6 weeks until her lungs developed further.
The child is now 5 years old and very healthy and happy! It is possible for your baby to survive at this point with some luck and excellent medical care.

My daughter was born at 27 weeks 0 days and is almost 6 now. She is healthy and happy. She was 2lbs. 4.2 ozs. at birth. She spent nine weeks in the NICU. 26 weeks is early, and every day in the womb makes a difference. The race and sex of the child also makes a difference, believe it or not! It also helps if the doctors can get steroids to the baby to help develop the lungs before the birth. Every child is different, but girls generally do better than boys. Try to keep that baby in 'till term!

I watched a program last week on a baby born at 23 weeks. After many complication and a few months in hospital the little boy has survived. But what his parents went thru was heart braking. The longer it stays in the better its chances are.

thats extremely early. The chances of survival are very very slim. Recently in the UK a baby that age survived, and it was a huge to-do. She was in the hospital for nearly 5 months or something like that.
Usually the earliest they consider safe without major long term health risks is 36 weeks, although by 32 weeks the chances of survival are very high.

i am 26 weeks too and yes there is a good chance that your baby could survive but if she did she could possible have a lot of problems. the lungs aren't mature yet. the eyes aren't done developing and it could cause mental retardation due to not being able to breath right after birth and other problems. so if she was born right now it would be very scary even if she does survive. i hope that you carry your baby to full term and that she's healthy and that you are taking good care of yourself. good luck.

I have a cousin who gave birth to a son at 25 1/2 weeks along. He weighed just under 2 pounds. We were very lucky and with the assistance of many amazing doctors he is now 5 months old and with no complications! He did have a few different surgeries for minor things but has made amazing accomplishments. Good luck!
