Has anyone ever heard of a Transponder 'PAT' Key losing its ability to work?
I only have one and the light flashes quickly on a 98 Ford Explorer when I go to start it now. THe engine won't start.
The Key is original from Ford.
Does anyone know how to check it or fix it?
Can a dealer tell if they are still workable without the car there?

Yes. a key can go bad, but not that often. If the light flashes fast, the pcm is not recognizing the key, or the transciever is not working. I'm sorry, but the real only way is to take the truck to a dealer, or possibly call a local locksmith, and ask if they can reprogram a PATS system, they will have to cut another key, as the ford system has to have 2 keys to access and program. Some locksmiths are getting the technology to do the repairs at your house, it would save you a tow bill, but cost for the house call..... 6 of 1 or 1/2 dozen of the other.........

Sorry buddy you are gonna need to tow it to a Ford dealership or someone who only specializes in Ford. Even if it was a matter of replacing just the key they are gonna need the car there to insert the key to the car and program it.

never heared of that, but maybe your key got too close to a magnetic field and screwed up the chip in the key? you best bet is to take it to a dealer and have them hook it up to the diagnostic tool, that would tell them whats wrong with it. it also could be the reciever part on the ignition switch that's messed up, or the anti-theft computer...
also check your battery, if the battery is too low, that could happen too, weired but it just happend to a friend of mine.
