A good question, and I take Ivan's point, that thirst is a human concept, so how about , 'can fish ever become dehydrated? and the answer to that is of course yes, whether they can feel it or not. 'Feeling' is not a criterion for dehydration, whereas it is a necessary criterion for thirst.

Actually, the answer is yes, but they don't feel "parched" like we do; they just get dehydrated. The water that they take in with the oxygen in their gills naturally hydrates them. So, technically, if they couldn't do that, they would get "thirsty." However, the blood of bony marine fish is not as salty as the sea water that they are swimming in, so, if a bony marine fish didn't have any mechanisms for dealing with this situation, water would leave their bodies via osmosis and they would dehydrate! Even if they are still swimming in water! Bony marine fish solve this problem by drinking the salty water, retaining the water and excreting the salts. They have special cells in the gills which actively pump salts out of the fishe's body. Since fish do need water, the bony marine fish would probably get thirsty if they neglected to drink. Sharks; however, never have to drink water.

Hello,

(ANS) Thats like saying do human beings ever get tired of breathing??

**I dont think fish even know what a thirst is? as thats a purely human concept and fish dont have reflexsive consciousness, fish only have simple consciousness which operates in a totally different mode. You have to have reflexsive consciousness to know your suffering from thirst. i.e. fish are NOT self aware in the same way humans are so they would know anyway.

i don't think that there is an actual known answer to that, i would say no, but fish do need the oxygen that is in water, so they might actually get 'thirsty' for that if the water is not clean enough..... hope that helps.
