Completely soak the feathers in the machine, the tub or the sink to weight it down before putting it thru the wash cycle. and wash your down jacket with a hot-cold wash cycle. Yes. You heard me correctly: WASH your down jacket... it's not true that you have to have it dry cleaned. The water should be hot (this will kill the dust mites in the feathers). And use soap. You can also use Fleecy or any other fabric softener. You shouldn't worry about washing down feathers, as this won't damage them... ever heard of a duck having something wrong with his feathers 'cause he got 'em wet???
What you do need to be aware of is that if you DRY the feathers on too hot a cycle, then you'll have problems. So once you've washed your jacket, either put it on the clothesline to dry and then fluff it in the dryer, or put it directly in the dryer (this is BY FAR the best and cost effective solution). Just make absolutely certain that the heat is on LOW and you have COMPLETELY dryed and fluffed it... Your down jacket will feel and look brand new! The way to tell if the feathers are completely dry is that there won't be anymore clumps of feathers in the jacket. To make certain that the feathers dry the easiest and the fluffiest, throw 3 tennis balls in the dryer with the down jacket. You can do this with a down duvet also.
Shake your jacket out really well before hanging it back in the closet or wearing it and voilà ! Brand new clean-smelling duvet!

NOT at the dry cleaners, the chemicals destroys it's waterproofing.
You are meant to wash them in a tub or sink by hand with detergent free soap and air dry on a clothes rack (most will be OK to put in a clothes dryer after they have been air drying for a few days which will even the feathers out again.) If the feathers clump just pull the clump apart

There should be directions on the jacket.
Wash on gentle with a powdered soap like Ivory.
Dry on low with a tennis ball or two. This will break up the clumps of down and re-fluff everything.

Take it to a laundromat and use the agitator-less machine. This will eliminate the uneven washing. When you dry it, use tennis balls to refluff the down.

You are not supposed to wash down anythings. You are supposed to have them drycleaned.
