or is the difference just the processor?

For all intents and purposes, just the processor. On a technical level, the chipset is also different, but you typically consider that as part of the overall processor platform. As far as current processors go, for the most part:
Intel Core 2 Duo > AMD Athlon 64 X2 > Intel Pentium D

And for single core systems:
AMD Athlon 64 > Intel Pentium 4

And for budget single core systems:
AMD Sempron > Intel Celeron D

Of course there is some overlap with the different model numbers, but that's a general guide.

Not too much of a difference. The trick is the upgrade (newer cpus coming out) and if they will fit the board. The Intel core2 is the fastest, but in games, you will not notice the difference in most cases. The AMD motherboards seems to support Crossfire (dual ATI video cards). I haven't seen any for Intel motherboards. And dual pci-e slots are really only good at very high resolutions and details. A single video card usually works good enough.

The processor and the motherboard chipset are different. Pentium, Core Duo, Celeron are made by Intel and the Opteron, Turion, Athlon, Sempron are made by AMD (American Micro Devices). There are also other processors like Transmeta, etc.

just the processor is different, many prefer amd over intel. IF you are into gaming, amd outperforms, but if its for microsoft office use mainly, then intel is fine.
