It really depends on what is the matter, and what his diagnosis was of the damage. Did he break his foot sprain it, pull some tendons or what?

Pain in an injury is usually associated with inflammation (swelling).
To stop the pain and swelling, use R.I.C.E.
R=Rest
I=Icing
C=Compression
E=Elevation

the foot is pretty complicated, lots of moving parts, what part of his foot did he injure?? His best answer should be coming from his doctor whom he should already have spoken to.
