From the day you contact them to start the claim, unless you have very extentuating circumstances that prevented you from claiming sooner.

Most benefits can only start from the date you apply for the benefit. Backdating for most benefits is only with 'good cause', such as being in hospital, being totally housebound, not being able to write etc. You cant get a backdate just cos you didnt know how to claim or that you could claim

I don't think you can backdate a new claim. You can only claim fron the date that the claim was made. Thats how it used to work, anyway. Might have changed now. I doubt it though.

This depends upon your circumstances, the reason why you didn't claim earlier & the period of time your trying to claim for.

When you do ask for back dating remember to give as much info as possible stating your reasons why you didn't claim but don't expect a ridiculous amount of time for back dating as this could lead to further questions on how you've supported yourself.

If you've been receiving working tax credit for the same period of time this would rule you out from receiving any benefit as can't pay both at same time.

Good luck

I would think that your claim could be back dated to the time of separation. But you will have the burden of proving the time of separation. And usually the matter is handled by the family court. But don't hold your breath waiting for the money to come in because sometimes it never comes in. If its a long time period I would go for a bulk payment settlement, a one time big payment then you don't have the hassle or waste your time on trying to get little payments which my never come.

Your claim is only payable from the day you make your application.
