I am looking for a new laptop, I have looked into Dell, as that is what I currently own, Apple Macbooks, and a few HPs. I have also heard of Sony Viaos and Lenovos but I do not know these brands well. Who in your opinion makes thebest laptops in terms of weight, memory, ram, features, I am a college student so of course affordability is a factor as well.

Actually, I would like to compare buying a laptop to buying a car. It really depends on the usage, budget and his/her needs. You mentioned that you are a college student and your courses may also affect what you would need. For multimedia, Apple iBook is recommended but for mainstream student that will just use it for reports, presentations, web surfing a Dell or HP will do. The Sony Vaio, Toshiba may be too rich for your blood and Lenovo, Acers, Asus, etc may not be that reliable. Choose wisely and try to get one with a 3-year warranty. I am using a lightweight Dell D410 Laptop everyday and it hasn't given me any problem whatsoever. Good luck on your studies! I hope you graduate with honors.

I support and purchase Lenovo Thinkpads at the university I work for, specifically the 2623-DAU. We also have other Thinkpads such as R40, R51, R52, and Z60's.

In my opinion, the case is sturdy and well tested. The notebooks perform very well.

I purchased about 20 of these last year. I don't like HP's design, it seems too boxy. Lenovo spends quite a bit on product development. We have beers with our Lenovo rep every now and then. They include a range of tools called the ThinkVantage tools to assist end users with things like wireless connections and backups.

Also make sure you get a 3 year warranty.
You can easily look at the various Thinkpad models on www.govconnection.com.

You should also talk with your school to see if they have a discount PC program set up.

Thinkpads may be a bit more, but the cost difference is reflected in the design. They are business grade notebooks. Some university's also have Thinkpad programs where every student gets a Thinkpad.

I would go with HP/Compaq all the way..Great value for the money but I would reccomend waiting a month or so before buying since the Windows Vista is comming out soon and then you can get it already on the computer and not have to deal with unistalling windows xp ect..I would stay away from dell right now though..Hp/Compaq..are a good laptop for a college student, Hope that helps..make sure you get atleast 1gb of ram and 80 gb hard drive.

Apple is a great company for a laptop, they are by far the most stable computer, besides maybe a Linux PC, but they lack compatability with a lot of programs. If you just want it for Microsoft Office, browsing and watching/listening to Music, Go Mac.

If you want to Game, use Shareware, (torrent/ p2p) downloads, go PC

I would say, Sony Vaio or higher end Acer or even Dell in some cases. you really might want to go to New egg, Dell.com or other manufacturers sites or even some 3rd party evaluators sites, such as Tom's Hardware!

Good luck!

my opinion ... almost any laptop will do if its configured the right way ... thats the thing with laptops .. the same one can be had in 100 different configurations ... the right way to choose a laptop is make a list of whats important to you as far as capabilities and features ... then u have to know what the different parts are and what they mean ... for example ...you should know that a uxga screen is better than an xga and that a wxga is a widescreen ... if u want a good one for school and graphic power isnt on ur priority list .. then an ibm thinkpad can be had in a lightweight thin model thats good on battery ...also go to newegg.com and look through their selection for laptops .. theyre categorized by price or any other feature u want to look at ...

hey :).. i dont recommend toshiba, mainly because i paid alot for a toshiba laptop thinking good name, good quality, good service etc, but had to return it 6 times.. mind im not saying all toshibas will be like this i could have just been unlucky! but the screen broke, then the chargers broke countless times, after having 2 replacement laptops and a fair about 3 chargers.. the screen decided to completely go off, took it to a repair shop and they told me the price of a new screen, so i decided it was better just buying a new laptop for the amount of trouble i had with it.. also toshiba's customer service is rubbish, they just seem not to care and try and blame the customer.. but like i said i might have just been extremely unlucky! my cousin is a computer technician and he says the best laptop to buy would be an acer.. as he has had his for about 2 years and never had a single problem with it.. i also know other people with acers and they all seem to be happy with it :) hope this helped x

I would either get a simple HP, one with not too much entertainment, or an Apple Macbook.
