I'm writing an article for my high school newspaper. Since the month of Feb. is Black History Month, I thought it appropriate to write an article about Dr. Martin Luther King.
Every since I've began writing this article, its been hard to find students who care or are even aware of this federal holiday. Not only do teens not care, but the majority of adults as well. Why do you think people don't seem to care these days? What are the major reasons? and Can we make them care?

Most people do not realize what a struggle it was for the civil rights movement. Most of the people today were either children or not born during that time and seem to believe what civil rights we have today we have always had. If children would talk to their grandparents, ask questions about Dr. King and Malcolm X, some would change their view and appreciate the holiday and the celebration of Black History Month.
As for a way to increase awareness of the Holiday the PBS shows that are running now, should be broad casted on major networks like NBC, CBS, ABC and others. Even with that not everyone will change their view or even want too.

Maybe there are a lot of people of colour that don't feel that enough was accomplished with the civil rights movement and there is much more that needs to be looked at. Equal rights among cultures, minorites, gender etc. is not that great. All ;you need to do is look at the statistics to do with incarceration, poverty, those in the armed forces and you will realize that people of colour are still facing grave discrimination.
What really is worse in this time is that nobody wants to admit that it exists. This makes it a real problem because there is then no dealing with it or discussing how to make life better.

people do not care because this holiday did not come "naturally"'
that is it came about only by force and threats from the ***** community. There are so many TRULY GREAT americans who are much more deserving of a national holiday.
It's kinda like a vegetable you are forced to eat, you eat it, but that doesn't mean you like it, and there are many others that you like and are better for you

Maybe more people are uncovering the truth behind the legend? Maybe it's because people aren't so hip to the fact that the only American to have his very own federal holiday is a communist, a plagiarist, a drug abuser, and a wife beating anti-white racist?

People are more worried about making their next dollar and listening to their IPOD. The high price of putting "dubs" on their car and financing their new "grill" to emulate all of the great role models on MTV. We have an entitlement society that thinks the gov't owes them and should take care of them. Go out get your own job, quit complaining, quit having children out of wedlock and take responsibility for your actions.
