A complex machine is made up of 2 or more simple machines. Simple machines include inclined planes, screws, levers, wedges, pulleys, and wheel and axles. All she has to do is come up with an invention using two or more of these things. I did this with my 4th graders when I student taught, and they came out great! They used objects such as light bulbs (screw), toy cars (wheel and axle), ramps (inclined plane) in their inventions. I am sure your daughter has a lot more information from class too. I know a lot of the text books aren't much help, so the teacher probably gave them handouts too. You should also double check the assignment sheet the teacher gave to be sure if there is a certain amount of simple machines they need to use for their invetions. Good luck--I'm sure she will come up with a very creative idea!

I'm sure it's in her textbook somewhere. Teacher's just don't spring that on you. Or do a search for "complex machine".
