Try Colby mp3 players (I found them at Toys-R-Us). It does not use iTunes. When you plug it into the usb port, it shows up on the desktop as an icon. Double clicking the icon will open it up as a stand-along disk. With it plugged in, simply drag songs into the Colby music folder.
The LCD is simple, but informative. Very easy to use and does not rely on iTunes. Don’t let the store or cost fool you. Both my kids had shuffles (older ones), Rave mp3s and one other version. They all failed miserably. The Colby’s are still working fine and have had no problems since Xmas.
If your just looking for something to play mp3s (and not all of the bells and whistles), you can’t go wrong with this one. Trust me – I have about $500.00 in junk mp3 players sitting in a drawer. Besides, the Colby’s work on AAA batteries. If it dies, just use new batteries, rather than having to leave it connected to a computer for 4 hours.

It depends on the size of the drive you want. You can get a Zen for a pretty good price. Or a zune, but I am not sure about the price for that. I have heard good things about the Zen and Zune.
