Its not the worm gear, the worm gear rarely strips. but it is a set of gears. go down to your local garage door guys and they will be able to set you up with the propor gear kit.
to be sure of this. open up the head of the opener. (the part mounted to the celing) if you see a white powder, no its not snow but plastic shavings.
if you change out your own set of gears be sure to use the lithum greese on the nylon gears, worm gear, limit gear. if you dont you might only get that door open 5-6 times before you find you have the same problem..
gear kit should cost you around $60
to have your garage door guys change it $60 (labor) should only take 1 hour (at the most)

Start with the sprocket on the motor. The motor shaft has a key way slot and the sproket also, the sproket is held in place with a set screw. If the key is broken, the motor shaft will spin inside the sproket. This happens when some one trys opening the door with it locked Check chain and lube if dry, also rollors on the door..

if it is a craftsman, chamberlan, liftmaster or any made by the Chamberlin group it sounds like the worm gear. Remove cover off of unit and if there is a lot of plastic debris and you see the gear is ate up it is just the worm gear. Look on top of worm gear (the one that is eaten up) and if it is black on top the sprocket is bad too. If it is worm gear they range anywhere from $20 t0 $30 for parts. Be sure to change both gears, and lube them very well with supplied lube. Sprocket kits run about $40 to $50. It should take hour to hour and a half to repair. It is a common problem with chamberlin openers. If you do it yourself there are some tricks that will help you.

Use the quick release to release the door and make sure it works smoothly in the manual mode.
If it does you probably need a new opener. If it doesn't check for obstructions or broken springs. Get the door working smoothly and reattach it to the opener.

Also the sprocket may be attached with a worm gear. the worm gear may be stripped. If so you should be able to replace it for around 20 dollars, provided it's not obsolete.
