Hey there,
First, SLAP your friend as he doesn't have a clue on what you need. Take that file and delete it.
Actually, if you go into your control panel (Windows XP) under sounds and speech, you should be able to check, "Place volume icon in the taskbar" and change it from there.
This should work for you, along with the other suggestions.
Also, slap your friend for me and tell him/her to get a real job and stop pretending to know about computers. :)
If, by chance, you can not put a checkmark in the show on tool bar, chances are you do not have the correct sound driver. Goto the manufacturer of your pc web site, and download the correct sound driver.

I would double click on that exe, I certainly would not save that to the system 32 directory.
Usually the exe that sets up the sound drivers will offer an option to place an item in the systray, and it is usually governed by a startup (msconfig) link or a specific systray link other than an exe, but it might start an exe for the sound control. The device control you need is in the Control panel, basically the systray links to an option there.

If the volume icon disappeared, most likely your sound drivers were removed, or are disabled.
Check the device manager to make sure your soundcard is installed correctly.
The sndvol32.exe file (program) won't work without a sound card installed.

* I'm assuming you're using Windows XP
1) Click START button, click on Control Panel
2) Double click on Sounds and Audio Devices
3) In the Volume tab, under "Device volume" box, make sure "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is ticked. Also make sure the "Mute" isn't checked, cuz you won't get sound if it is. Also make sure the volume is not on Low but somewhere in the middle or to your comfortable sound level. If that "Device volume" box is greyed out and you can't click on anything, you probably have to install or reinstall your sound drivers for your sound card.
Hope this helps!

I don't think that will solve your problem, but I've outlined how to do it below:
Double-click on My Computer.
Double-click on C:.
Double-click on Winnt.
Click Show File Anyway if it comes up.
Open up your My Documents Folder in another window.
Click and drag the program from one window to the other window.
