A type of plow used for turning over the soil (instead of just cutting a trench in it). Especially useful for opening up new fields, when you have to cut through overgrown grass. The sod gets turned over and self-composts to nourish the crops you are going to plant.

A farm instrument used to turn soil over. It was used for many years as part of the row-crop planting process. Not used much at all now.
It is a piece of steel curved so that it digs into the soil, lifts a 14 or 16 inch wide section of soil and turns if over topside down on a continuous movement.
