The Apollo flights to the moon. They achieved a velocity of about 25,000 miles per hour--a good bit faster than orbital missions (about 17500). Some unmanned spaceprobes to other planets have gotten to higher velocities, but that's the fastest humans themselves have everr gone. The first to actually do this was Apollo 8 (Borman, Lovell, Anders--Decempber 1968)--so I guess they hold the record.

Shuttles orbiting the Earth travel at about five miles per second (? something like that). Nothing close to that has been reached within the atmosphere.
