1.Kobe Bryant- He can shut down anyone he wants. He often plays the best offensive player down the stretch, but doesnt regularly because they usually need his offense more than his defense.
2. Bruce Bowen- dirty and I hate him, but he gets away with it.
3. Ron Artest- Always tops in steals, but doesn't gamble to do it.
4. Marcus Camby- Blocks and rebounds are always in the top three in the league (when he's healthy).
5. Ben Wallace- Not nearly what he once was. I hink now he is living off of his legacy.

The guy considered to be the early favorite for defensive player of the year is Dwight Howard so I'd go with him
then guys like Okafor who block a lot of shots while controlling the paint
Ron Artest who is very fiesty on the ball
Ben Wallace has lost a lot this year but is still probably in the top 5 with his ability to be fast enough to stick with smaller players and block shots of big guys
and the 5th even in a limited role is Alonzo mourning. No one protects the basket like Mourning and he was a HUGE reason the heat are the champions.
BTW: to the guy who said AK was a huge reason the jazz got off to a good start, the big reason Utah has improved so much is Boozer. Boozer's play is the difference for Utah, they even went 5-0 early in the year without AK and did not miss a beat.

there is no defense in the NBA nor is there any defense FOR the NBA. It is to basketball what the WWE is to wrestling, its just an exhibition and its purpose is to sell products. While the NBA had merit in the days of Magic, Bird, Elgin Baylor, etc. it is really nothing much like a sport anymore and has lost its major television contracts and has accept pretty much whatever TNT or the Outdoor network or whomever will pay them to televise. The bidding war is over for the NBA. I wonder if the NHL has surpassed the NBA in fan interest?

You still have to clarify, do you mean one on one defender ( shut the other teams top scorer) or team defender block shots in the paint? The top individual defenders are probably Kobe Bryant, Bruce Bowen, raja bell(when hes healthy), Shane battier, and Shawn Marion. Team defenders are Ben Wallace, dikembe mutumbo, Alonzo mourning, Tim Duncan, and ill throw in Kevin garnett.

since you said 5 i will just do it by positions...
C- Ben Wallace...
PF- Kevin Garnett
SF- tough one... three way tie, Ron Artest, Bruce Bowen and Gerald Wallace
SG- Dwyane Wade
PG- I think Iverson is a pretty good defender in the PG ranks, he can get steals and aggravate the defense into needless turnovers.
