I thought it is $250 million.
Why do we scrutinize athletes salaries, but not movie stars?

Yes it is stupid. They are banking on his star power to bring in new fans and take the MLS to a new level. The problem is real soccer fans will watch the MLS in the hard times and good times. These type of fans know Beckham is a mediocre soccer player. True soccer fans need something bigger to happen to get this league going. In the end will all the women who like Beckham stick to watching and attending the games even after he leaves or are sick of him? NO!
Then on the other hand, beckham might be the lead to some other Euro stars arriving to the MLS, that is another key point!
If this does happen, the gamble will pay off.
Peace,

Yes. Beckham isnt really that marketable in the USA. But Beckham isnt going to play football hes paid to play soccer here. He get killed if he played football. Plus Los Angeles dont have a football team.

He is being paid that much to help promote the sport in the U.S. where it remains popular but a minor sport. He is a pretty good and should accomplish that and will sell out stadiums each time he goes to a new city. Its not crazy and he should be paid whatever he can earn and he will earn it though he will not last five years so it won't be that much in the total end.

Yeah. There is no way they are going to re coupe that money in the US.
I think it was probably a good move for Beckham. His career was winding down. He will probably last a few more years in the MLS. I hope he won't be too disappointed with the size of the crowds in the US.

No.
You must consider how much money he will make the clb over the five years of his contract. He will:
Sell millions of extra Galaxy shirts,
Sell many more tickets,
Attract more / bigger sponsors.
Overall he may well be a shrewd investment, as well as increasing the chances of LA Galaxy winning the title due to his undoubted class and skill.
Note $250m is £128m (just to clear up the confusion)

If you believe in freedom, you can't put limits on money just because it seems like a lot to you. Who decides how much is "too much"? You? Me?
The only logical way to decide is to let the free market decide. If the company he's going to play for didn't believe he was going to make a profit for them, he wouldn't have got an offer of that much.
Of course they could be wrong!
(Plus if you do the math it's "only" six million quid a year!)

It's actually around $250 Million.
I don't think he only got signed to play football, he also got signed to market the game and to increase the fan base hopefully here in the US. If it pays off then no it is not ridiculous. It's well worth it.

If he can pull in enough audience to make 'football' (what we Americans call soccer) a more popular sport here and increase the earnings of the league, it will be a worthwhile investment.

Yes, maybe, but this is also very American. Nevertheless, I think it is a price to make football more popular in the US. By the way, my son, who is only 8 y.o. thinks David became a traitor.
