I was wondering about the non-prenatal variety.

Only a regular multi vitamin, you dont want to take things with weird herbs and stuff in it. I had to take a multi-vitamin for most of my pregnancy because the prenatal made me sick.

You dont need to take extras of anything with it. Theres enough folic acid in that and your food. A prenatal for the folic acid would be needed BEFORE you got pregnant, since the time before you know you're pregnant is when the embryo uses the highest amount. From then on, about 8-10 weeks on, you get enough from your regular diet and multi vitamin.

now iam taking flinstones... lol.

When I was 32 weeks I got a bad cold. I stayed home in my bed and cracked a window and drank watered down OJ and sucked on Halls Vitamin C drops. I did not take anything Rx or over the counter. I do not believe in taking meds during pregnancy .. the cold comes from a virus which can not be treated with antibiotics anyway so why expose the baby to them unnecessarily. Whenever I did leave the room, I sprayed Lysol int he room and stayed on the couch for an hr or two and then went back in my room. I slept a lot because all I could do was watch TV and play Tivo games, but it took 4 days and I was good to go. I continued the OJ and water and the Halls drops just to be sure it was gone even though I resumed my normal activity and school and work schedule. I did not stop taking my prenatal at this time, as I felt they were very important. Do open the window.. keeping the germs cooped up the room is not going to help at all.. and if you can step out for some fresh air for even just a few minutes, it will benefit both you and the baby. You may also want to run a humidifier in the room. Dont worry about the room being cold.. heat will just allow the germs to grow and spread.. use a warm blanket to keep yourself comfortable. My baby was born full term at 39 weeks and he is healthy and thriving. Good luck.. Feel better..

You can, but you're better off with the prenatal kind, there is the extra things you need. They cost the same as brand name vitamins.

I wouldn't they do however have cheaper prenatals but the don't taste as nice(experience) I would try those new Expecta LIPIL DHA supplement if you are doing like me checking every mommy to be site out and filling out surveys they should've sent you a coupon for them. Walmart I know sells those pills for $10.00 so with the 2.00 off coupon they should just cost you around 8 dollars. If you find that you have the money for any talk to your OBGYN they could give you some samples to at least get you started( mine did)

yes, you do not need to take pre-natal, you can take regular vitamins but you need to make sure everything you need is in those vitamins because vitamins differ from brand to brand. most vitamins however have about the same amount as prenatal vitamins do (i have compared)

You should only take the pre-natal kind b/c some multi vitamins contain herbs that you don't want during pregnancy. Also, the pre-natal kind have a balance of nutrients especially designed for pregnancy.

You should always ask your doctor before taking any medication or vitamins, whether prescription or over-the-counter.

You can take them, but you should really discuss any medication you plan on taking with a doctor before taking it.
