The absolute best program that you can get your hands on for this and all the other "stuff" you're gonna want on you ipod is one called iGadgets you can download a trial but the program will cost you if you want to keep it--- which would be a big positive as a suggestion here--- it will be able to sync almost anything you want on that thing from almost anywhere !!!
Go take the trial http://www.download.com/

If you have them on a DvD, you can rip them. I recommend "DvD Ripper" and "Vedora iPod Converter." The ripper will only get it off the DvD and onto the computer. The converter will make it iTunes compatible and much smaller. Use http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?postid=267286#post267286 as a guide for the Ripper, making sure you're using IFO mode Stream Processing.

You need a good video ripping software like Past River apps.

This guide will explain you how to do it explicitly (screenshots included): http://www.riverpast.com/en/support/tutorials/convert/vob/ipod_video.php

For free software to do the job, follow this guide - http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/14/how-to-convert-a-dvd-for-your-ipod-with-video-in-windows/

Enjoy your vids on the ipod! :)

You will either need copyright override software or to buy them on iTunes.
