Gosh! This question takes me back to the good old days when my family and I used to huddle round a few pieces of burning coal in an attempt to keep warm. We used to put pieces of bread on long forks and toast them. Often, we'd wrap a potato in foil and place it in the embers. And chestnuts, too!
I seem to remember we had a little set that hung from a stand next to the fire. There was a pair of tongs, a brush, a shovel and a small silver poker.
Then my parents bought a gas fire, and now I cannot recall what a real fire looks like
