It comes from the Latin word for friends/companions and I would define it as relating to society, to the human beings around you. Social services, for example, are a body dealing with the welfare of human beings; social work is work among human beings and one's social life involves contact with fellow human beings.

Social work is a profession and a social science committed to the pursuit of social justice, to quality of life, and to the development of the full potential of each individual, group and community in a society. Social workers draw on the social sciences to solve social problems. Social workers can often help families, such as children in care and a variety of other domestic situations.

Although the term "social" is a crucial category in social science and often used in public discourse, its meaning is often vague, suggesting that it is a fuzzy concept. An added difficulty is that social attributes or relationships may not be directly observable and visible, and must be inferred by abstract thought.

The context in which u use i caqn help how to define it.
for example...if you say someone is very social it means that that person is, lets say, friendly and outgoing with the general public.
On the other hand...a lot of us base our daily lives around the social norms.......which would basically mean we would be embarrasd to go about ways which are not seen as 'normal' in the publi eye.
then again...the explanation of tthe word 'normal' can itself be open to debate. I mean...where do we draw the line?!?!
