It would depend on how good of a houseguest he is and if he seems like he is even trying to get on his own feet. If he is a decent guy, give him 6 months or so, if he seems like a free loader, 30 days max.

You mean on a weekday? I think a friend should come over no more than twice a week for 2 hours and on the weekend for no more than 4-6 depending on what is going on. If you mean on a long-term basis I'd say no more than a weekend. However, if there is an agreement (like he is needing a place for one week) then just do it. But he better leave when the time is up. Only allow one suitcase and don't let him get to comfy.

For me, it would be 2 weeks, tops. And that's assuming you have a guest room, not just a couch. If you don't have the guest room, I'd say no amount of time is inapproriate.
