You cannot tell the difference of where its coming from to be honest, if it was amnio fluid it leaks from your uterus and out of your cervix and down on.
It could have been your mucus plug, at different times of your pregnancy you can lose it but it regenerates itself.
During my last pregnancy I lost mine 3 times before birthing, once at 3 1/2 months, 6 months and again at 7 1/2. From what Im guessing is what you've experienced is the normal vaginal discharge of pregnancy if so that wont be the first time it will happen
If you seen your midwife she should have checked for certain, whether the discharge is amniotic fluid and done a nitrazine test. This is done by inserting a cotton swab into the vagina; if the discharge is amniotic fluid, the swab will change from a yellow to blue color, or using the strip andit will change color also if leaking.

There are at least a couple of ways to determine what this fluid is that you are losing. From your question it does not sound like you will have peace of mind until you have an answer so you do need to go to hospital/antenatal clinic. As previously mentioned a scan should be able to tell you if there is adequate amniotic fluid round the baby. There is also a test called an amnistix which looks a little like an orange cotton bud on a longer stick which in the presence of amniotic fluid (called liquor) turns black. This is a fairly conclusive test however it is something that the hospital would have to do. On occasions a small "hindwater" leak can seal itself, and as approx. 95% of amniotic fluid is the babys urine it would be made up in about 4 - 6 hours.

BrunettesRbetter has the right idea. Vaginal secretions during pregnancy can be more noticeable - I remember this from both of mine. I'm guessing this is your first pregnancy? I worried about everything during both of mine and I had two extremely healthy baby boys who are now 9 and 5 respectively. Get checked out next week if only to put your mind at ease. You and your baby will be ok but good luck anyway with the rest of your pregnancy.

Amniotic fluid isn't clear, it's yellowish.... it was probibly urine like your midwife said. Yes the baby can survive, if your water broke you'd have seen a bit of blood with it since you're rather early in your pregnancy. If there is no blood i woudln't worry too much. If you Are worried though, go to teh hospital, they'll check if it was amniotic fluid with a little stick thingy and then you'll know for sure.

Well, despite what the midwife said, I would go to the hospital right now and get it checked out, 1, to allay your concerns before next week, 2 to make sure the midwife was right.
It just seems odd that at 16 weeks the baby would be pressing on your bladder, that's all.
It's not worth taking a chance.
Best wishes.

If your water is leaking, you are at risk for infection inside the amniotic sac, you need to get checked right away. This is dangerous to you and the baby. I hope it was just your bladder, but it is much better to get checked and be able to have peace about it. Good luck to you and the baby.

Amniotic fluid is constantly being produced so losing a little bit shouldn't hurt. However a large loss of amniotic fluid this early in the pregnancy can cause problems. You should see a doctor ASAP.

A fetus cannot survive without amniotic fluid, but if your midwife checked you out you should be okay if she said you are. If it was amniotic fluid you would have still been leaking it when you got checked out. Once the sac ruptures, the fluid will keep trickling. It's okay your urine was clear, it's a sign you have adequate fluid intake. Ideally, it's actually supposed to be clear.
