I was told as long as you don't let the china go throught the drying cycle it will not be damaged and I have done so a few times and so far nothing has happened.

My machine has a china setting. I agree, you should not let the heat run during the drying cycle and I would hand dry and put them away immediately after the rinse cycle.

Do not wash china in the dishwasher if porcelain or with intricate patterns or trimmed in gold. I would not wash any FINE china in a dish washer if I were planning t keep it for years and years. Over time it will look dull and could have chips in the trim. China that has been passed down from one generation to the next should be hand washed.

Fine china with gold or silver trim will loose the trim in dishwashers. Not just the heat cycle, but also the stronger detergent is to blame. Hand wash.

Also the caustic nature of the detergent will etch crystal or just glass. The more cuts in the glass, the faster it will gunk up with mineral deposits.

Find china, crystal and silver should all be hand washed. Wrap your silver in Saran wrap to keep it from tarnishing if you don't have anti-tarnish wrappings.

The dishes will usually say on the back whether or not they are dish washer safe, but to be on the safe side I wouldn't just because the good stuff tends to be so expensive to replace, and the heat of the dishwasher might cause cracks and or coloring to fade.

The heat will remove any metallic trim, the abrasives in the dish washing soap scratch up the glaze and makes them look dull. If there are any bare spots of metal on any of the racks and the dishes sit against them it will leave rust spots on your china. If there happen to be any bubbles of air in the porcelain the high heat will make them crack.

Personally, I would not put china nor crystal thru the dishwasher-at all. Several years ago I was told that the oils from your hands helps keep china and crystal from becoming brittle, easier to break.

I think they also say you should not wash them on account of the fact that they might bang against something while in the washer and get chipped. Has happened to me. If it is really good china I would not risk it.

DON'T DO IT! Especially if you have any kind of gold, platinum edging. The platinum will come off. In addition, china will become weak over time beig exposed to the harsh detergents and temperatures in your washer.

The manufacturer will usually recommend whether or not to machine wash their products. I have noritaki and I never machine wash it.
